What It Is

The Rural Renewal Stream (RRS) is part of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). It lets specific rural Alberta communities recruit and recommend candidates to fill local labour needs. Only communities that have applied for and received “designated” status can take part.

Key Terms

Designated community
A rural Alberta community that has been approved to take part in the stream.
Endorsement letter
A letter from the community confirming a job offer fits local needs. The candidate uses it to apply for a nomination.
Nomination
Alberta’s support for a candidate’s federal permanent residence application.

Who It’s For

Workers with a job offer from an employer in a designated rural community, in an occupation that community has identified as needed.

Job Offer Required?

Yes, from an employer located in a designated rural community. The employer must also show they made a genuine effort to recruit locally before offering the job to a foreign worker.

What It Leads To

Permanent residence. Like other AAIP streams, an RRS nomination supports a federal application for permanent residence.

Step by step

How the Process Generally Works

  • Community & employer
  • Alberta (AAIP)
  • Federal (IRCC)
  1. 1

    Community & employer

A rural community applies for and receives designated status.

  2. 2

    Community & employer

An employer in that community offers a job to a candidate.

  3. 3

    Community & employer

The community reviews the offer and, if it fits local needs, issues an endorsement letter.

  4. 4

    Alberta (AAIP)

The candidate applies to the AAIP for a nomination, using that endorsement.

  5. 5

    Federal (IRCC)

If nominated, the candidate applies to the federal government for permanent residence.

Good to Know

This stream changed as of January 1, 2026. Newer rules include caps on how many candidates each community can endorse per year, endorsements that are only valid for a limited time, and closer checks on the type of work permit (if any) the candidate holds. Because interest in this stream has grown quickly while nomination spaces stay limited, competition for a spot can be significant, and requirements are likely to keep evolving.

Important to Know

Rural Renewal Stream rules, designated communities, and nomination numbers are set by the Alberta government and can change, as they did at the start of 2026. This page describes the general shape of the stream. It does not guarantee that any individual, employer, or community endorsement will lead to a nomination.
