From Service Canada

Keep your skilled workers through a slowdown.

Information shared by Service Canada (Employment and Social Development Canada, September 2026). Programs and dates can change, so check the linked Canada.ca pages before you apply.

Work-Sharing Program

Helps employers and employees avoid layoffs during temporary downturns in business activity beyond the employer's control. Employers can reduce employees' hours while workers receive Employment Insurance (EI) benefits for the time not worked. Temporary special measures for businesses affected by U.S. tariffs are in effect until March 31, 2027.

Worker Retention Grant

For employers with an active Work-Sharing agreement. Top up employees' income while they work reduced hours and take training, to retain skilled workers and upskill your team. Applications are open until December 31, 2027.

Worker Retention and Retraining Program (coming soon)

Will combine the Work-Sharing Program and the Worker Retention Grant into a single program and application. It will provide up to $1,000 per participant for training and administrative costs, and participating EI-eligible workers will be able to receive support for a total of 70% of their lost earnings for time not worked.

Service Canada Outreach

Proactive outreach before decisions are made, plus responsive support for employers and workers facing a mass layoff, workforce reduction or Work-Sharing situation. Complete the request form to connect with a Citizen Services Specialist in your area.
