Alberta suspends its fuel tax from October 1

September 22, 2026 Red Deer Advocate

Drivers and businesses will save 13 cents a litre for the rest of 2026, subject to quarterly review.

The Government of Alberta will suspend its 13-cent-per-litre fuel tax from 1 October 2026 through the end of the year, Premier Danielle Smith and Finance Minister Jason Nixon announced on 22 September.

The province pointed to rising global energy prices and high pump costs. The tax rate is reviewed each quarter against West Texas Intermediate oil prices, so the suspension is subject to review.

For businesses

For fleet operators, trades and anyone running vehicles for work, the change lowers fuel costs from the first fill-up in October.

The province will watch for price gouging, with fines of up to $300,000. Suspected unfair pricing can be reported on 1-877-427-4088.
